I have been studying in Dubai since last year. But Egypt was a country which always fascinated me for its unique culture. I had a deep desire to visit the Land of Pyramids. To fulfill my long-cherished dream, I travelled to Alexandria with two of my classmates recently. We booked a hotel located at a stone’s throw from the beach, overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. It was also well connected with the airport. We opted for the hotel keeping the location factor in mind. Its air-conditioned rooms were equipped with a satellite TV, fridge and free Wi Fi. We were highly satisfied with the amenities mentioned in the hotel’s site. The rates charged were also quite affordable as compared to what we came across while surfing through the websites of other hotels based in Alexandria. We reached Alexandria from Dubai by FlyDubai airlines. Our journey was a comfortable one. We landed at the Al Nouzah Airport during the late hours of the evening. All three of us were tired after the long journey. Therefore, we went to bed early. Here are some of the memorable moments of our Alexandria trip: - FlyDubai | Image Resource : flydubai.com Getting to know the city The next day, we went out to visit the notable attractions around the city. The starting point of our sightseeing across the city was the Bibliotheca Alexandrina. This attractively designed museum is modeled on Alexandria’s Great Library of antiquity. The giant sun disk is the unique aspect of its architecture. The large reading room has a capacity of holding eight million volumes. The Manuscript Museum here has a great collection of ancient texts. We also visited the Antiquities Museum that contains Graeco-Roman artifacts. The Fort Qaitbay is located on the site of the Pharos Lighthouse, which was one of the seven wonders of ancient world. After the lighthouse was destroyed by a violent earthquake, the fort was built by Mamluke Sultan Qaitbay to protect the port from invaders. We had a bird’s eye view of the Mediterranean Sea from here. Shopping
During the evening, we went out for shopping. Our first destination was the Potomac Yard Center. Situated on the Jefferson Davis Highway, it has outlets of leading brands like Best Buy, Old Navy and Barns and Noble. Therefore, we had a great time visiting the shops which dealt in items from some of our favourite brands. We then went to the Torpedo Factory Art Center which is home to Egypt’s largest collection of open studios under a single roof. Here we came across a wide range of paintings, photography, ceramics, jewellery, fiber, sculpture and printmaking. What made the place special was the existence of 18th century wharves, shops, taverns and homes, and a famous bakery of the 19th century. Memories of the trip Our trip to Alexandria was a life changing experience for all of us. Once the capital of Cleopatra, it offered us with the ample opportunity to shop everything under the sun at a reasonable price than Mumbai. Alexandria as a tourist destination will always remain special for all of us.
